It is documented that the Victoria Working Men's Club opened in 1900 (1), and indeed the third edition Ordnance Survey maps of 1919-1926 (2) seem to support this with the appearance of the first building on the site of the present day club house. The club is recorded in relation to various events within Murton, including: in 1918 the Murton branch of the Comrades of the War formed in the club; in 1937 the club partially burned down and in 1956 a new dance hall extension was added to the club (1). The club today is known to contain a number of features dedicated as war memorials (3-4).
