Barracks (Durham Militia), Barnard Castle (Barnard Castle)
The barracks, erected in 1864 (1) are a group of buildings labelled as "barracks (militia depot)" on the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey map of 1894 (2). The barracks were active during World War I (3) as the headquarters of the 4th (Special Reserve) Battalion Durham Light Infantry (1). They were enlarged in 1914 and the annual training took place in June (1). The majority of the barracks were demolished during the late 20th century. An ornamental gateway survived at Birch Road {H37159}.
