Barnard Castle, Bowes Museum (Barnard Castle)
The Museum, built in the French Renaissance style, had its foundation stone laid in 1869, but was not completed until 1892 when the building was opened to the public, due to problems with funding.
A number of war memorials can be found in the grounds of the museum and it is documented that at one time a German Gun was placed in front of the bandstand with its barrel pointing towards the gates. This was perhaps a memento of the First World War. The war memorials are still located in the grounds but the gun is no longer there (3).
