War Memorial Cenotaph/Statue, Entrance to St. John's Churchyard, Main Street, Shildon (Shildon)
First and Second World War Memorial. Unveiled 1923 with a statue by Humphries, Jackson of Manchester. Granite plinth surmounted by a sandstone pedestal with bronze plaques and bronze life-sized statue of a kneeling First World War infantryman with fixed bayonet.
Rectangular plinth has hollow-chamfered corners with broaches and a stepped top. Front of pedestal has a bronze laurel wreath above the dedication: "See ye to it / that these / have not died in vain". "In / grateful remembrance / of / Shildon's glorious dead / 1914-1918". Bronze plaques on the sides have the names of First World War dead in three columns whilst a plaque on the rear face is dedicated to those who fell in WW2. (1-5)
