Woodland, Penny Hill (Woodland)
A Victorian account of a discovery of lead slag and fine loamy sand, "unquestionably brought from a distance," and evidence of ancient sheet-lead manufacture was recorded in the Teesdale Mercury in 1871. All the slag was carried to the Gaunless smelt mill. The site is now a major conifer plantation and no lead mining remains are visible.
