Vicus at Bowes Roman Fort (Bowes)

These are the remains of a Roman settlement or vicus next to the Roman fort of Lavatrae.

Excavations in 1980 revealed traces of walls, a circular building, and some paving possibly associated with the building. Finds included brooches, dress fasteners, a scabbard chape and pottery of mainly 2nd to 3rd century date.

Excavations in 1999 showed that the settlement was a well-planned village. Pottery made in Britain, France and elsewhere in the Roman Empire was found. The site appears to have been in use throughout the period of Roman rule in Britain.
