Possible Site of Austin Friary, Barnard Castle (Barnard Castle)

This was probably the house of a group of Augustinian Friars. It was founded in 1381 and only lasted until 1387. An old house stood on this spot it was probably not the Friary, even though it had a Latin inscription carved onto it. The house was later rebuilt and the inscription damaged. Excavations by archaeologists near the site have found the remains of a medieval stone drain and nine medieval burials.
