Hospital Of St John The Baptist, Barnard Castle (Barnard Castle)
This is building is on the site of a medieval hospital. Until 1950 it was used as a house though it is now a workshop. The hospital was founded c.1230 by John Baliol, and was described as a 'low thatched building, containing one room only called the bedehouse'. In the 15th century it may have had its own church. In 1497 the Pope granted an indulgence to those attending the hospital chapel, apparently a separate building, on certain days.
