Early maps show a long narrow pond in this area (1). This may have been a medieval fishpond for the nearby Crook Hall. In the days before electric fridges, freshly caught fish formed an important part of the diet of wealthy families. Many country houses had large fishponds to ensure that they had a steady supply of fish.
