This is the site of the Roman fort known as Longovicium. It was rectangular in shape and had four gates. A ditch surrounded it; in some places a second ditch was also dug. Archaeologists have found the remains of the headquarters buildings, a bathhouse and some barrack buildings. It was built in the mid 1st century AD and was in use through the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. The remains of the large stone walls can still be seen in places. This is a Scheduled Ancient Monument protected by law.

The site of a Roman fort initially constructed in the Hadrianic period (AD 117-138), and possibly destroyed in the late 2nd century. It was reconstructed in the reign of Gordian (AD 238-284) and was probably in use until the late 4th century. The site of the vicus was excavated in 1975 when a large building was found in association with pottery dating from the 2nd century to the 4th century.
