Chapel or hermitage at Heighley, Winston (Winston)

A medieval chapel or hermitage once stood here, but the last remains disappeared in the 19th century. Until it was destroyed it had been in good condition with decorated windows. (1) (2)

A chapel or hermitage at Heighley in Winston Parish, mentioned in an early inquest, stood low down in the holme (may refer to Holme Wood at NZ 134155). The last remains were recently removed in forming a new hedge, and the piscina is preserved in Mr Deighton's garden wall at Winston. Bishop Kellaw in 1315 speaks of "waste lands and wood in Heighley in Winston called Hermitage" as if the cell or chapel was even then nothing more than a memory.
