Sheraton Deserted Medieval Village (Sheraton)

Sheraton © DCC 2007
Sheraton © DCC 2007
These are the remains of the shrunken medieval village of Sheraton. It was first recorded as 'Scurafaton' in 1050. The earthwork remains of several enclosures are probably the sites of some of the medieval houses. The village is separated from an area of ridge and furrow by a well defined trackway.

A Medieval settlement is visible as earthworks on air photographs taken in 1951, later photography taken in 1990 shows that the earthworks are still extant and fairly well preserved. The earthworks include building platforms, tofts, crofts, fishponds, hollow way, scarps and ridge and furrow. The remains include about half of the original village, the rest is now under present day buildings in a village astride the A19. Sheraton was previously known as Sherveton and is known to have existed from the 12th century until the late 16th century. Scheduled.
