Morbium AKA Morbivm AKA Piercebridge Vicus, The Tofts, Piercebridge (Piercebridge)

Piercebridge © DCC 2007
Piercebridge © DCC 2007
In the Roman period a large settlement, known as a vicus, grew up outside the fort at Piercebridge. Aerial photographs of this area have shown the cropmarks of about 30 buildings. Excavations by archaeologists in 1973 found the remains of two rectangular buildings. One contained a hypocaust; another an altar. Both were dated to the 3rd century AD. Workshops including kilns, bronze working debris and metalworking areas have been found. This is a Scheduled Ancient Monument protected by law.
