St Mary Magdalenes Hospital And Chapel at Witton Hall, Witton Gilbert (Witton Gilbert)

The hospital of St Mary Magdalene at Witton Gilbert was founded by Gilbert de la Lay c.1154-80 for five, later eight, lepers. The hospital was not in existence at the time of the Dissolution.

The present farmhouse incorporates a pointed window of late 12th century or early 13th century date, and a round-arched Norman doorway, which was probably the chief entrance to the hospital.

The remains of a chapel known at the site and dedicated to St John are possibly located towards the river. A chapel dedicated to St John was also located at {Beaurepaire D1310} and this may be the same building which has been confused previously.
