Burials at a cave site, Bishop Middleham (Bishop Middleham)

The bones of at least six people were found, along with objects of late Bronze Age and early Iron Age date.

A vertical fissure and adjacent cave, the latter being cut into by workmen during quarrying in 1932. Subsequent excavation revealed it had been used as a burial place in the past. Human remains were discovered, comprising at least 11 individuals and including three crouched inhumations beneath sandstone slabs near the base of the fissure. Other finds included animal bones, pottery of Late Bronze Age and Iron Age date, a bone point, and a bronze object described as a small rectangular item comprising two thin plates of bronze fixed with three rivets. The finds are in the Hancock Museum, Newcastle.
