This college dates back to 1965-7. Its architect was Stillman and Eastwick-Field. It was expanded in 1982-3 and 1989-91. A meeting hall (the Sir James Knott Hall) was added in 1972-3 (1).
The college had its roots as an all-women's college, being the last purpose-built all-women's college to be built for a British University. Men were first admitted in 1992. The college gets its name from the George Macaulay Trevelyan a historian and Chancellor of Durham University from 1950 to 1957 (2).
