War Memorial Cottages, Front Street, Shotley Bridge (Shotley Bridge)
Terraced row of three brick-built two storey cottages, opened in 1921. A plaque inserted into the wall between the central and right lower windows states that the cottages were erected in memory of men from the neighbourhood who fell in the First World War, 1914-1919. The cottages were originally occupied by disabled soldiers and a war widow. It is documented in a local newspaper article of 1989 that there was public outcry against the decision to demolish the buildings after they had stood vacant and been subjected to vandalism over a 10 year period. The Shotley Village Trust took it in hand to save the buildings and in 1992 the cottages were refurbished. An additional plaque was erected in the garden at the front stating that the restoration was carried out in memory of service personnel from the area who had given their lives in World conflicts since the end of the Great War.
