This building appears on the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey map of 1894 (1). The Working Men's Conservative Club, in Charles Street, was erected in 1894 at a cost of over £2000. It is a structure of red brick, and contains reading, smoking, card and billiard rooms. There are also apartments for the caretaker and there are about 800 members in 1914. Frederick Thomas Talmadge was the secretary of the club in 1914 (2).

This building was also in use during World War I as a billet (3). It is documented that a WW1 memorial roll of honour was unveiled here by the Marquess of Londonderry in 1919, listing 182 names of men who served, 6 of whom died (4-5).
