Durham City Baths 04/11/2021
Site of swimming pool built in the 1930s. The previous Baths building by the 1920s was dilapidated, old-fashioned and inconvenient. A baths and public wash-house building is seen at this location on the first edition Ordnance Survey map (around 1860). The City Council made use of Government aid to construct a new building providing public swimming pools, slipper baths and washhouses. It was anticipated that the new baths would be a great asset to the city, and that swimming would consequently appear on the school curriculum at the New Central School. (1)
By the 1970s four more buildings had been built on the site. These included a clubhouse to the south of the Baths and a electrical substation to the east (2).
This site was added to the Local List on 13th November 2023.
