War Memorial Cross, St. Lawrence's Churchyard, Middleton-One-Row (Middleton One Row)
Granite cross of Celtic type on the right hand side of the church path just inside the entrance to the churchyard from the junction of Church Lane and Middleton Lane. Rough hewn cross with encircled head on short shaft standing on a two-tiered pedestal at the top of two steps, small border for flowers around the base. Wreath and sword carved in half relief over the crosspiece of the cross with the dedication on the tapering shaft below: Sacred / to / the memory / of our men / who gave / their lives / in the / Great War / 1914-1919. Names for the First World War are in two columns separated by a vertical line on the front face of the upper pedestal section. Dedication and names for WW2 are on the left side of the upper pedestal whilst one name has been added on the riser of the lower pedestal belonging to a soldier killed in Iraq in 2003. Originally unveiled 1922 and rededicated after restoration in 1997. (1-2)
