Consett, Dere Street (Consett)
Part of the course of 'Dere Street', a major Roman Road that crosses the entire county. When workmen dug a pipeline trench across the line of this road, archaeologists examined their holes to see if anything was visible. They found a layer of large stone slabs overlying an area of compacted smaller stones. This was a kerb overlying the agger for the Roman Road.
